Senior consultant orthopaedic surgeon and head of
orthopaedics at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital (SQUH). He established the orthopaedic
service at SQUH in 2008. Prior to that, he was a senior consultant at Khoula Hospital where
he established the Limb reconstruction unit in 2003.
He obtained BSc (Med. Sci.) from St Andrews University (1987) and MBChB from Glasgow
University (1990) in Scotland, UK. He completed his orthopaedic and trauma training at the
Mersey Deanery, England, UK in 2002. In addition, he is fellowship trained in deformity
correction and bone lengthening in Liverpool, UK & Verona, Italy.
Dr Al Maskari is involved in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education and
training. He was a member of the curriculum committee of the College of Medicine &
Health Sciences at SQU. He also was the deputy chairman of the accreditation committee of
Oman Medical Specialties Board (OMSB) and member of the education committee and
chairman of the research subcommittee of the OMSB orthopaedic program.
Dr Al Maskari’s clinical interests focus on the lower limb and include deformity correction
and bone lengthening, joint replacement and arthroscopic surgery. He is particularly
passionate about bone and joint preserving techniques, reparative techniques such as ACL
and meniscal repair, and regenerative bioresorbable 3D printed technologies in combination
with stem cells, bone marrow and adipose tissue for bone defects and osteoarthritis. He is a
member of a number of international societies in this field such as ICRS, OARSI & TERMIS.
